The Sleep Disorders Center

Headaches in the morning, snoring, high blood pressure or diabetes, sleepiness or fatigue in the daytime are symptoms of sleep apnea.

The Sleep Disorders Center at TriStar Greenview offers a comprehensive range of services and treatments for sleep disorders, including sleep apnea, periodic limb movement disorder or restless legs syndrome, narcolepsy and snoring. Treatment is individualized to each patient’s needs. We evaluate patients ages 8 and older.

Sleep apnea is a disorder characterized by a reduction or pause of breathing (airflow) during sleep. Research has shown that more than 5 percent of adults have sleep apnea. Although a diagnosis of sleep apnea often will be suspected on the basis of a person's medical history, a sleep test is used to confirm the diagnosis. The most common and effective treatment of sleep apnea is with continuous positive airway pressure.

The hospital's Tuyen Trinh said there are good reasons to have sleep facilities that are located inside the hospital. Patients feel safer knowing that physicians, nurses and other staff are readily available.

She noted that TriStar Greenview will offer coordinated patient follow-up with their physician for successful treatment.

The facility provides four comfortable rooms for diagnosis and treatment.

The treatment involves polysomnography, which is a series of tests performed on patients while they sleep. Polysomnography is a comprehensive overnight procedure that evaluates the patient's airflow through the nose and mouth, blood pressure, heartbeat as measured by an EKG, blood oxygen level, brain wave patterns by EEG, eye movements, the movements of respiratory muscles, and limb movements.

Testing typically consists of an evaluation (Baseline polysomnogram) on the first night; and, when the Baseline polysomnogram results in a diagnosis of sleep apnea, a second night for the treatment (Titration polysomnogram).
